Minnesota Orchestra
The Minnesota Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra founded by Emil Oberhoffer in 1903 as the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. The first performance was on November 5, 1903. In 1968 the name was changed to Minnesota Orchestra and in 1974 the orchestra moved from the Northrop Memorial Auditorium on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis to the Orchestra Hall in the center of town. . The current principal conductor is Osmo Vänskä. Eiji Oue was the conductor between 1995 and 2002.
Symphonic dances by Rachmaninoff
Symphonic dances, Opus 45 and Vocalise, Opus 34 were recorded in 2001 at the Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. Symphonic dances consists of the non allegro, andante com moto and the lento assai.
Vocalise was written by Rachmaninoff in 1912 for the soprano Antonia Neshadova.
Rating
As you would expect from a Professor Johnson recording, this LP sounds excellent. All instruments are easy to follow, a wide "stage" and the timpani really come into the room.
