Mari Boine
Mari Boine, born in Gámehisnjárga, Karasjok, on November 8, 1956, is a Norwegian joik singer and internationally renowned representative of her people, the Sami. Joik is the traditional music of the Sami and is believed to be one of the oldest musical forms in Europe. Mari Boine, originally a teacher, has renewed the joik by incorporating elements from jazz and rock, as well as folk traditions from several cultures. Approximately 70,000 to 100,000 Sami live in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Around 20,000 of them still speak the language (actually a group of languages).
Gula Gula
My first experience with Mari Boine was in 2007. This performance left a lasting impression and made me a fan. On "Gula Gula," she sings only "Oppskrift for Herrfolk" in Norwegian, a protest against the Norwegian oppression and discrimination of her people. The other songs are in Northern Sami and feature the typical "joik" vocals.
Review
The recording quality is fine, but not audiophile-quality.
